Trying to get some ideas of things to do in the Hilo area. We like to go to What's Shakin' when we're visiting and we usually combine it with a trip to Hilo. We've done the Tsunami Museum, VNP, Akaka Falls, and Botanical Gardens. Can anyone recommend something else to do in that area (that a 9-year old would enjoy)?

I know its a ways away, but how about a drive up the coast to the train museum with lunch at the 50's diner? Just a thought...

Stay at this hotel!

Trust me, it will be an adventure! (hint: Those ratings are phony, and the bad ones are being nice.)

It's the "Ranked #6 of 8 Hotels in Hilo" and knowing that even the #1 is a POS, you can imagine how bad this one is!

I had to stay there last year! It was somewhere below bad. I was kind of wishing we'd stay'd at Uncle Billys. I was with a Public Health officer (think C. Everett Koop). She wanted to get in the car and drive over to Kona - I pointed out that we'd been required to pre-pay and wouldn't get a refund. Plus, we'd have stellar morning drive to make our 7 AM meeting schedule (it was already about 10 PM).
