So the time has come for me to propose to my beautiful girlfriend. We have been together for over 4 years now and I am planning on doing this whilst we are vacationing in Kona in August.
Now i have never been to the island before and am having a few troubles with suitable locations for the event.
Where would people suggest? What is the most beautiful location or setting that i should take advantage of?
I have been googling and researching and the mountain and observatory seems like a great setting but all the tours are package deals. Not very private or romantic.

Does anyone have any knowledge of people that do private tours or could help me with the planning? I will of course pay but without island knowledge this is becoming a little challenging.

I appreciate any help that anyone could bring to this, am a little lost.

I am not the most romantic person in the world (Just ask my wife). But we have been in some of the most romantic places in all of Hawaii. One of my favorite places and the most beautiful IMHO is Waipio Valley. If you could do a picnic on the beach in Waipio Valley I don't think you could go wrong. JMHO of course.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing!

Forget the observatory, it's so cold up there that you two would feel everything but romantic. While I agree with Dave about Waipio Valley, you would need to hike down there, and by the time you reach the bottom you will not feel romantic. (You will feel even less romantic if you think of the hike back up!) If you really want to hike than Pololu Valley at the North end of the island is a better option, it's an easy hike and there is a black sand beach at the bottom.

My recommendation is to go to have lunch at the Four Seasons Hualalai, and after lunch walk to the North end of the property along the ocean. There is a fishpond there in a beautiful natural setting. That's where you should drop on your knees!

Call me funneh, but I always liked the ruins behind the Marriott. You can walk through the fish ponds and then curve around to the public beach. It's one of my favorite easy to reach spots.

I'm not romantic either, but I can probably give you a ride to Waipio beach. Weather can be unpredictable though. Better have a back up plan.

Just wanted to say a huge thanks for all the input.
Am searching the options that you guys suggest now.
Am also reaching out to a personal guide to see if they can help with the experience.
If you have any more pearls of wisdom, please know they are greatly appreciated.

Perhaps you should think about the things you two enjoy doing as a couple (except the obvious of course).
If you like to hike, then maybe Waipio Valley or Pololu Valley would be a good option.
If you enjoy lounging on the beach, then maybe you can do it on a nice beach at sunset.
If you enjoy fancy meals at nice restaurants, there are many options on the island.
If you enjoy adventure, you can do it while zip lining or parasailing.
Hope this helps.

If you dive, do a night dive with the Mantas!
