Looking for a condo or small house rental recommendations for Hilo side. We will be doing all the tourist stuff. We will be in the Hilo area for 5 days in July 2013. Thanks :)

The few condos in Hilo are in a very sorry condition, you might want to try a B&B instead.

There are a lot of nice rentals Hilo side listed on VRBO. Just remember that you will have a cleaning fee tacked on to the nightly rental.

You probably can get a beter deal renting in Hawaiian Paradise Park, but if you want Hilo, we have stayed at the Shipman House and the Waterfalls(?) Inn a few times, they both are nice.

Looks like we’re going to rent a house in the Volcano Golf and Country Club subdivision. Across the street from the park. What is the shortest distance from Kona airport to the Volcanos National Park? Google says 101 miles following the southern route. What do the pros say?

Just did the trip on Sunday, and that is correct. We are about 10 miles south of the airport and it usually takes about 2 hours. There is a very windy section down in south Kona, that can take you down to 25-30 mph. Only drag can be if you get stuck behind someone going really slow because there is no place to pass. Once you get to about Miloli'i it's pretty straight until Naalehu, past that it's fine till the park. Remember the weather up there is totally different from either Kona or Hilo, this trip it POURED and was windy in the high 50's in Volcano.

It's a nice subdivision, and it's on the "dry" side, but while technically it is across of the VNP, it's a few miles from the actual entrance of the VNP. There is a winery nearby, check it out. The wine is terrible, but their gift shop has lots of cool items.
PS. Yes, go South, it will be about 30 minutes shorter. Watch your speed between Naalehu and VNP, as well as inside the park boundaries.
