Volcano Art Center (VAC) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational organization created in 1974 that serves to develop, promote and perpetuate the artistic, cultural and environmental heritage of Hawai’i people through the arts and education. VAC operates a retail arts and crafts Gallery in the historic 1877 Volcano House Hotel in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, next to the Kilauea Visitor Center, under a cooperating agreement with the National Park Service. VAC presents programs at the Kilauea Military Camp Theater, Volcano Art Center Gallery (VAC Gallery), the adjacent hula platform in Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and at VAC's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village.

“Images from the Edge” Opening Reception. This opening reception features the exhibited photography of multiple finalists who submitted work to the first annual “Images from the Edge” photo contest. An Intimate Evening with Jeff Peterson. Born on the Island of Maui, multiple Grammy Award and Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner Jeff Peterson grew up on the slopes of Haleakala where he was introduced to the rich heritage of Hawaiian music by his father, a paniolo or Hawaiian cowboy, at the Haleakala Ranch. As a performer, Jeff has had the honor to work with a wide range of artists and groups including Eric Clapton, Aaron Neville, The Honolulu Symphony and others in the fields of Hawaiian, classical, and jazz music. He has four recordings with Riley Lee: “Maui Morning”, “Bamboo Slack Key”, “Haiku”, and “Haleakala.” Jeff is currently on a tour of China. Earth is Born, Time of Crisis and Peace, Center of Universe Exhibit Reception. Since 1972, Susumu Sakaguchi’s paintings have been shown in galleries and museums all over the United States and Japan. His resume reads, New York, New York, Tokyo, Tokyo, Philadelphia, Hiroshima, Nagoya, Jersey City. He now makes his home in Volcano, Hawaii. Earth is Born, Time of Crisis and Peace, Center of Universe Exhibit of the works of Susumu Sakaguchi. “The last thing we think about is the Earth. We are conscious and sensitive to those things that change before our eyes; our sensations are boundless yet our perceptions are finite,” states world-renowned artist Susumu Sakaguchi. He considers his paintings to be neither social nor political, but a natural response of one person expressing inform and body of sensibility, a biological destination. Cool Night of Jazz with Ray Brown Jr. Ray Brown Jr. was born in New York City and raised in a family of musical royalty, the son of singer Ella Fitzgerald and legendary jazz bass player Ray Brown, Ray Brown, Jr. learned at an early age to appreciate the beauty and artistry of music. Although the primary emphasis was jazz, Ray's heart was in rock and roll and rhythm and blues. The family migrated to California where he studied piano at the age of 10. An Intimate Evening in Concert with Barry Flanagan. Barry Flanagan is an American singer-songwriter and musician and founder of the internationally acclaimed and award winning World Music group HAPA. Flanagan is known for his guitar-playing, vocal performances and ocean awareness projects. Born in New York City and raised in Bergen County, New Jersey, Flanagan came to the Hawaiian Islands in 1980 to study and explore the Art of Kiho Alu, or Slack-Key Guitar, and Haku Mele, Hawaiian poetic song composing. A prolific composer and performer, and one of Hawaii’s most respected and celebrated Recording Artists and Producers, Barry Flanagan has composed some of Hawaii’s popular songs of the last three decades. Beginning Silk Painting – Join Patti Pease Johnson in this enjoyable and easy morning workshop. This three hour workshop includes an introduction to color theory, tips on mixing color (using only the four printing process colors: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black, a lesson on stretching the silk on a frame and more. The result is your design on a stylish 8”X53” silk scarf. Beginning and experienced artists, ages 10 and up. As a bonus, during the last hour of class, you will use the wax tjanting tool on China silk and paint your design for a taste of the intermediate class. Intermediate Silk Painting – Learn the process of painting on silk using wax and the tjanting tool with Patti Pease Johnson. This process creates a resist line for the dyes, to achieve more realism in completing a 12”X16” painting on China silk. After stretching your silk on a frame, you will draw your original design on the silk and use the wax tjanting tool to outline it. All colors are achieved by pre-mixing the four printing process colors or mixing them directly on the silk. Students should bring with them a design concept from an original photo or from plant materials or objects. You can prepare a 12”X16 sketch. Open to ages 10 and up. Volcano Historic Homes Tour. Boone Morrison, AIA, noted Volcano architect and local expert in historic restoration, will lead a tour of historic homes and properties in the Volcano area. On this tour, he will be joined by William Chapman, Director of the Graduate Program in Historic Preservation at UH-Manoa. This is your chance to visit these sites with very knowledgeable guides. Fortunately for Volcano Village, many of the structures built in the early 1900s remain in good condition, and several have been lovingly restored. The character of the old Village remains intact, with many architectural examples to serve as guidelines for those engaged in creating new structures for the Village. Volcano Community Foundation, in collaboration with Volcano Art Center, is presenting this tour. The fee is $40, which includes transportation within the Village and a light lunch. Pauline Wilson, A Night of Seawind. Pauline Wilson is an American jazz/pop singer best known as lead vocalist with the jazz/fusion group Seawind in the 1970's and early 80's. Born and raised in Hilo, Hawaii, she won a Grammy Award in 1979 for her duet "Friends" with George Benson, part of the album In Harmony/A Sesame Street Record and voiced The Fairy on the track "My Fairy In The Crystal Reeds (And Other Frogs)" from Michel Colombier’s album Old Fool Back On Earth. During most of Seawind's main period of activity, Pauline was married to Bob Wilson, the drummer/main songwriter of the group. Volcano Village Artists Hui 26th Annual Art Studio Tour & Sale. Over Thanksgiving weekend, on November 23, 24, & 25, 2012, the Volcano Village Artists Hui will host their 27th annual Art Studio Tour & Sale. Visitors are invited to meet the artists in their studios, and see artworks in a wide variety of media. Pottery, raku masks, hand blown art glass, wood & metal sculpture, hand tooled metal, and fiber art as well as photographs, paintings, drawings and block prints will be on display and available for purchase.
