This is a very slippery slope [pun intended]. The idea that Kona Coffee has to be 100% grown in the Kona District on the Big Island is fine if that is how it is decided to be described. But that puts the farm that is located 2' outside the Kona district at a distinct disadvantage to their next door neighbor. What is the difference between coffee grown in either Kona district and the coffee grown in Ka'u or Puna? I like what Sharky's does by trying to differentiate themselves by growing 100% organic coffee. They are located in the Puna district and the coffee is terrific! But because they are not in either North or South Kona their coffee is not as popular. To say that Kona Coffee is defined by having at least 51% Kona grown coffee in the bag then opens up mainland resellers to selling "Kona Coffee" which can have a very different or bad taste depending on what the other coffee is that is mixed with it. Then you have the resellers that will buy coffee grown in other parts of Hawaii and call it Kona. All of this degrades the reputation that Kona Coffee inspires.

Personally, I drink what I like. I prefer Sharky's for obvious reasons but I also enjoy a good cup of coffee from anywhere in the world. But when it comes down to what I buy for myself to brew at home like anything else it is a matter of personal taste.

Dave, if it was the "Kona District" I wouldn't say a word, but it is not. It is just a small section of the Kona District and that is wrong. I agree with you, there are farms growing wonderful coffee all over the island and I feel fortunate that I found Sharky's Coffee because their coffee really is the best on the island.

How can anyone love any of the Kona blends is beyond me. Those are 90% of the cheapest coffee available anywhere mixed with 10% of the lowest grade Kona coffee available anywhere!

Anything to cash in on the value of the name. There is a lot of garbage coffee with the word "Kona" on the bag. Similar problems with Jamaica Blue Mountain.

Sharkys is good the price is good but when I was there last I bought some Kona Komfort and I really liked it. Can be bought on the internet but when I went and picked it up they sold it to me for half price.

When I run out I drink Strabucks Sumatra. I like a deep dark cup of coffee. No sugar, creamer and certainly never any flavorings.

I would have simply said Kona before I became more educated. When we stayed in a B&B in Southpoint we had local Ka’u coffee for the first time. It was wonderful! Now I don’t really know my favourite...but I cannot wait to live on the BI so I can try a lot of the local brews!

Good thing this is a multi-year thread!

Well, most people probably don't even know, but they already were growing coffee in Mt. View on the East side when coffee was still unknown on the West side of the island!
